The Alaska Student Chapter

The Alaska Student Chapter of the Society for Marine Mammalogy (AKSMM) was founded in spring of 2016 to support marine mammal graduate and undergraduate students in the state of Alaska. After a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, we relaunched in 2022 with hubs in Fairbanks, Juneau, and Anchorage!

Marine mammalogy is a relatively small field, and we seek to provide networking opportunities, improve collaborations, and support research and exploration for Alaskan students. Our chapter meets monthly during the academic year (September - May) to increase connectivity, host guest speakers, and support the work our members are conducting across the state.

Our chapter also recognizes that of the largest challenges associated with research is finding funding. We conduct annual fundraisers to support costs associated with marine mammal work, such as member participation in international conferences.

Our chapter is open to all Alaskan student researchers. Check out our social media pages for regular updates on our activities and fundraisers!
